The first three events will remain the same for the second year of the Tour playoffs: the Barclays, Dautshe Bank Championship and BMW Championship, all in consecutive weeks, starting Aug. 21. But after the BMW, which rotates from Chicago to St. Louis next year, the Tour will take a weeklong break before the Ryder Cup at Vahalla outside Louisville, Ky. The season's grand finale, the Tour Championship, has been pushed back to the week following the Ryder Cup, Sept. 22-28.
The week off before the Ryder Cup should make for just the kind of break that many of the top players -- namely, the two biggest, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson -- said was needed after this year's debut of the FedEx Cup. Actually, the break makes for two weeks off for top players who don't make the Ryder Cup. This past year, Woods and Mickelson, who rarely play more than three or four consecutive weeks, both skipped a FedEx Cup tournament rather than slog through a stretch of seven straight weeks that included a World Golf Championship event, the PGA Championship, and four weeks of playoffs.
Woods and Mickelson were among several top players who had warned they'd do the same thing again next year if the Tour didn't build some kind of breather into the schedule. The Tour got the message. "We felt it was important to give those members of both the U.S. and European teams who will be competing in the playoffs the ability to prepare for the Ryder Cup while also focusing on the Tour Championship the following week," commissioner Tim Finchem said. "It's a shame they didn't think of this before," Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger told the Associated Press. "They wouldn't have had to go through the headache of getting it right."
In another change, also at the urging of top players, the Tour has decided to make most of the $10 million bonanza that goes to the winner of the FedEx Cup up-front money rather than a retirement annuity. Next year, the winner pockets $9 million immediately, with $1 million going into his retirement fund. The money will remain deferred for players finishing outside the top 10.
